Ukraine War: Russia Attacks, Ukraine Strikes Back – Blackouts

Russia continued its attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid overnight to Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding six in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukrainian officials said. Ukrainian drone strikes also damaged energy networks in Russia-occupied parts of southern Ukraine, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

Ukraine Energy Grid Under Attack

According to Ukrainian officials, at least six people were wounded in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Russia also targeted energy infrastructure in the Odesa region, where a fire broke out and was quickly extinguished. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Telegram that repairing the country’s energy system remains challenging, but efforts are underway to restore power as quickly as possible.

Zelenskyy reported that two people were killed in overnight attacks across the country, impacting Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa. The military recorded 30 strikes across 15 locations. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, one person was killed, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Power Outages in Russian-Occupied Ukraine

Kremlin-installed authorities reported that Ukrainian drone strikes damaged energy networks in Russia-occupied parts of southern Ukraine, resulting in widespread power outages. More than 200,000 households in the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region are without electricity, according to the Kremlin-installed local governor Yevgeny Balitsky, who reported nearly 400 settlements have had their power supply cut.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Repairs

Repair work on a backup power line connecting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to the power grid has begun, facilitated by a ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Vienna-based UN organization announced the development on X. The fate of the plant – occupied by Russia and the largest in Europe – is a central issue in ongoing US-brokered peace talks.

Spanish Prime Minister on Potential US-Greenland Conflict

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated in a newspaper interview that a US invasion of Greenland would make Russian President Vladimir Putin “the happiest man on Earth.” Sánchez argued that such action would damage NATO and legitimize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, stating it would be “the death knell for Nato” and leave Putin “doubly happy.”

Ukraine-US Peace Talks Continue

Ukraine’s top negotiator said talks with US officials on ending the war with Russia will continue at the World Economic Forum opening this week in Davos, Switzerland. Rustem Umerov reported on Telegram that two days of talks in Florida with a US team including Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner focused on security guarantees and a postwar recovery plan for Ukraine.
