Ontario Premier Doug Ford is criticizing the federal government’s recent tariff deal with China, which allows up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into Canada annually. Ford has also voiced security concerns regarding the vehicles and the technology they contain.
Ford Accuses Ottawa of Lack of Communication
Ford expressed his disappointment with the lack of communication from the federal government, stating he is aware of where he stands in the matter. He accused Ottawa of using Ontario auto-workers “as a pawn.”
Concerns Over Unfair Competition
The Premier cited recent plant closures in Germany and Brazil, alleging that China is undercutting western markets. He stated, “I have concerns that they’re undercutting our hard-working autoworkers and Unifor members.”
Ford highlighted the disparity in labour costs, noting that Chinese auto plants likely pay workers around $6 an hour, while Ontario upholds proper labour practices and utilizes clean, green steel. He emphasized the need for more communication regarding trade partnerships.
Security Concerns Regarding Chinese EVs
Ford believes Chinese EVs could be used to spy on Ontarians and listen to their phone calls. When asked about the basis for this assertion, he pointed to the use of “burner phones” by the Prime Minister and his team during a recent visit to China.
“It’s very simple, when the Prime Minister and his team were over there, they used burner phones. You’re making a deal with a country, with burner phones…and the Prime Minister did mention when he got elected that the number one country for national security threat is China. And we know, when you hook up your phone, they’re going to be listening, simple as that. And anyone who doesn’t believe that is very, very naive,” Ford said.
Ford intends to have “honest” conversations with the Prime Minister regarding developing trade partnerships with China.
