Federal agents detained a man identified by the Cumberland County Sheriff as a corrections officer recruit in Portland, Maine, on Thursday.
Social media footage shows the man stating, “I’m a corrections officer,” as agents restrain him next to his car. Ben Bozeman, who filmed the incident, told CNN that an unmarked vehicle pulled the man over.
Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said the recruit, whose name has not been released, had submitted documentation showing he was legally authorized to work in the US until April 2029 and had passed the department’s “rigorous” hiring process.
“This individual’s background revealed no disqualifying conduct or no disqualifying convictions,” Joyce said.
However, Joyce stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informed him the recruit was in the country illegally.
CNN has contacted the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
Joyce described seeing video of the detainment, noting the agents left the recruit’s vehicle on the road with the windows down and the lights on after handcuffing him.
“That’s bush league policing,” Joyce said.
The sheriff contrasted the incident with statements made by Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s former border czar, in early 2025, regarding ICE and Customs and Border Protection priorities: securing the border and removing criminals from the streets.
It was not immediately clear if the man remains in federal custody. CNN has reached out to Joyce for confirmation.
