The fire at 8 King Street, West, was reported around 4:00 a.m. Firefighters are still on scene extinguishing remaining hot spots and ensuring the site is safe.

The Emergency Evacuation Centre at the Keeler Centre has been deactivated. Approximately 15 tenants, along with their pets, utilized the centre at its peak.

Tenants requiring housing assistance have been placed in temporary hotel accommodations for up to seven days while they explore longer-term options. County Social Services caseworkers are providing support with housing, identification, health and wellness, and next steps.

“Our hearts are with the tenants who have lost their homes and belongings as a result of this devastating fire,” stated Warden Bob Crate. “Losing one’s home is profoundly difficult, and I want residents to know that the county remains fully committed to walking alongside them as they begin to recover and plan for what comes next.”

Crate also expressed gratitude for the response from various organizations and individuals, including Social Services staff, police, fire, paramedic services, NCHC Board members, county facilities staff, Cramahe Township, the Red Cross, OCEAP, and community members who donated supplies and offered assistance.

The county is continuing to collaborate with emergency services and partner agencies and will release further information as it becomes available. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.
