Iran Nuclear Talks: US Demands Concessions

The Trump administration has asked Iran to come to their next meeting prepared to offer substantive concessions, according to sources familiar with the matter. The request came after an initial meeting in Oman between U.S. and Iranian officials led by Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Initial Meeting Focused on Process

Friday’s meeting between U.S. and Iranian officials in Oman was described as “good,” with a focus on establishing a framework for negotiations rather than addressing core issues. U.S. officials expect Iran to present concessions regarding its nuclear program and other matters at the next meeting.

Iran Rejects Halt to Uranium Enrichment

Abbas Araghchi stated Sunday that a complete halt to uranium enrichment is “absolutely unacceptable” to Iran. He indicated that discussions should focus on scenarios allowing continued enrichment for peaceful purposes, alongside assurances of its non-military intent.

Negotiation Scope Limited by Iran

Araghchi also stated that Iran considers its missile program and regional proxy activities to be outside the scope of the current negotiations, asserting that the discussions are limited to the nuclear issue.

U.S. Concerns and Israeli Position

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Wednesday to discuss the negotiations. Israel maintains that any agreement with Iran must prevent the development of nuclear weapons, restrict ballistic missiles, and end support for regional terrorist groups. Israeli officials have expressed skepticism about Iranian promises.

Regional Tensions Remain

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar emphasized the threat posed by Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons to regional and global peace during a meeting with his Paraguayan counterpart. Iranian Army Commander Maj.-Gen. Amir Hatami stated that Iran’s military is closely monitoring the situation and prepared to respond to any aggression, noting the continued presence of U.S. ships in the region.
