A Democratic member of the House Oversight Committee says efforts are underway to ensure accountability regarding the Epstein files, despite the Justice Department’s recent decision to halt further action. Representative Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico emphasized the importance of building a congressional record for potential future indictments and prosecutions.
Epstein Files Investigation and Accountability
Representative Melanie Stansbury, who sits on the House Oversight Committee investigating the Epstein files, stated that lawmakers are focused on ensuring those who took oaths to uphold the Constitution and execute the law are held accountable.
Stansbury was responding to questions about the Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s statement that no further action would be taken following the release of the latest batch of files. She pointed to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Trump in November, as the relevant law in question.
“These lawmakers and officials will not be there forever, and they certainly will not be protected by this president forever,” Stansbury said.
While acknowledging the current Justice Department’s refusal to indict or prosecute individuals, Stansbury affirmed that Congress is “building a case for further indictments and prosecutions.” She added that a key part of Congress’s work is to build the congressional record to ensure accountability.
