A gunman is dead after crashing a vehicle into a Jewish temple in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and exchanging fire with police on Saturday. The incident at Temple Israel prompted a massive law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown of several schools in the area.
Temple Israel Shooting: What We Know
Authorities responded to reports of a shooting at Temple Israel around 7:30 p.m. EDT. The suspect, whose identity has not been officially released, drove a vehicle into the building before opening fire. Police returned fire, and the suspect was later found dead inside the temple.
No injuries were reported among the congregation or law enforcement personnel. A bar mitzvah was underway at the time of the attack, and approximately 25 children were present, but were safely evacuated.
The FBI is assisting with the investigation, and authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. The incident occurred amid heightened concerns about antisemitism and safety within American communities, following a separate violent attack at a university in Virginia.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the West Bloomfield Police Department, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan State Police. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
