The University of Indonesia (UI) has achieved a historic milestone by having its academic disciplines ranked across all five broad subject categories in the 2026 QS World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject: Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences & Management, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Natural Sciences.
University of Indonesia Achieves Broad Subject Ranking in QS WUR
This marks an improvement over the previous year, when UI was represented in only four broad subject areas, according to a statement released by UI Rector Heri Hermansyah on Friday, April 3, 2026.
Heri emphasized that this accomplishment solidifies UI’s leading position nationally and strengthens its growing influence in Southeast Asia. He stated the university is at a pivotal moment, with a strong national foundation and an expanding regional presence.
“The next challenge is to accelerate the leap toward a group of universities with stronger global influence,” Heri said.
To achieve greater global impact, Heri outlined a strategy focused on elevating more fields of study into the Top 3 in Southeast Asia and ultimately reaching the top 100 universities worldwide.
“These efforts heavily rely on strengthening research quality, expanding international collaboration, and increasing high-impact publications with global reach,” Heri explained.
The university’s strategy aims to balance specialized excellence with overall quality, according to UI officials.
“Thus, the transformation toward a world-class research university is not just a vision, but an ongoing and increasingly targeted process,” Heri said.
UI has demonstrated improvements in rankings across all subject categories. The Social Sciences & Management cluster now ranks 146th globally, rising from 176th the previous year. Arts & Humanities improved to 168th (from 190th), Life Sciences & Medicine to 281st (from 331st), and Engineering & Technology saw a significant increase to 262nd (from 368th). Natural Sciences entered the global ranking for the first time, placing in the 451-500 bracket.
UI currently holds the top rank in Indonesia across three broad subjects – Arts & Humanities, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Social Sciences & Management – all of which are now ranked within the Top 10 in Southeast Asia.
