Andaman Sea Boat Tragedy: 250 Missing After Ship Sinks

At least 250 people, including Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, are missing after a boat capsized in the Andaman Sea during a voyage toward Malaysia.

Rescue Operations in the Andaman Sea

Nine people, including eight men and one woman, were rescued from the water on April 9. The survivors were found floating at sea by the crew of the M.T. Meghna Pride, a Bangladesh flag carrier traveling from Chittagong to Indonesia.

The rescued individuals were handed over to the coast guard and subsequently delivered to police in Teknaf. A coast guard official stated that the rescue was not part of an official search operation, as the incident occurred outside of Bangladeshi territory.

Details regarding the exact timing of the sinking and the status of current search efforts were not immediately available.

Causes of the Rohingya Refugees Tragedy

The trawler departed from Teknaf in the southern Bangladeshi district of Cox’s Bazar. According to a joint statement from the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the vessel lost control and sank due to rough seas, strong winds, and overcrowding.

UN officials stated that the disaster reflects the protracted displacement of the Rohingya people and a critical lack of durable solutions to their crisis.

Ongoing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has made a safe return uncertain. This, combined with limited humanitarian assistance and restricted access to employment and education in refugee camps, continues to drive vulnerable individuals toward risky sea journeys based on false promises of better opportunities abroad.

The UNHCR and IOM have urged the international community to strengthen funding and solidarity to ensure lifesaving assistance for the more than 1 million Rohingya refugees currently sheltered in Bangladesh.
