Extreme Heat at the DMZ Peace Marathon
A total of 12 runners suffered from symptoms including convulsions, dizziness, and hyperventilation. Local authorities stated that the stricken participants appeared to have pushed themselves despite the rising heat.
The event, which takes place near the sensitive demilitarized zone separating South and North Korea, saw temperatures approach 30°C. A fire official urged the public to monitor for signs of heatstroke and to stop exercising and cool down immediately if symptoms appear.
Record-Breaking Weather Patterns
In the capital city of Seoul, located approximately 30km from Paju, temperatures reached 29.4°C over the weekend. This marks the highest temperature for mid-April since modern record-keeping began in 1907.
The Korea Meteorological Administration indicated that the heat spike was likely caused by a temporary weather system drawing warm air northwards. Officials also noted that human-driven climate change is raising global temperatures and increasing the frequency of extreme weather.
