Faishal Ibrahim Resigns Over Inappropriate Online Interactions; No By-Election

The political career of Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, who served as Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, came to an abrupt end on Monday, July 20. The 58-year-old resigned from the Cabinet, the People’s Action Party (PAP), and his position as a Member of Parliament for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC after acknowledging that his interactions with a female member of the public fell short of the standards expected of a political office holder.

Investigations into Online Interactions

The situation surfaced approximately one month prior to the resignation, when the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) received an email from the woman involved. According to The Straits Times, most of the interactions took place through online messages, supplemented by occasional meetings on the sidelines of public events. Both parties subsequently filed allegations of harassment against each other, prompting a police investigation.

Following consultations with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, authorities determined that no criminal offense had been committed by either party. Despite this legal clearance, the government conducted a separate assessment regarding the propriety of the conduct.

No By-Election for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC

Following the resignation, PAP chairman Desmond Lee confirmed that no by-election will be triggered in the five-member Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC. Under Singapore’s electoral system, the resignation of a single MP does not necessitate a fresh vote. Instead, the remaining four MPs—Seah Kian Peng, Goh Pei Ming, Tin Pei Ling, and Diana Pang—will absorb the responsibilities for Faishal’s former ward, Kembangan.

Mr. Seah, who leads the GRC team, emphasized that the immediate priority is to ensure residents face no disruption in service. Colleagues described Faishal as a dedicated public servant, with Ms. Tin Pei Ling calling him an empathetic and highly supportive team member while acknowledging the seriousness of the lapse in judgment.

Political Succession and Career Legacy

Zaqy Mohamad, currently the Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment and Defence, has been appointed as the new Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs with immediate effect. Prime Minister Wong expressed regret over the circumstances of the departure but noted his appreciation for Faishal’s decision to take responsibility.

Faishal’s departure ends a political career spanning nearly two decades.

“On reflection, I recognise that my conduct fell short of the standards expected of me and was not consistent with the responsibilities entrusted to me. I have therefore decided it is right for me to step away from politics, so that I can devote my time and attention to my family.”
