Jody Brown Outlines the Growing Concerns Behind the Exit

Woking director of football Jody Brown revealed that the National League side parted ways with manager Jermain Defoe following growing concerns across the club. The two parties mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect earlier this week. The 43-year-old former England striker had been in charge for four months and six league games.

Brown explained that Defoe’s exit caught many by surprise given the manager’s public demeanor. Jermain’s feedback was always positive, and he regularly expressed his enthusiasm and excitement for the season, both publicly and privately, Brown said. I can therefore appreciate the surprise and subsequent speculation surrounding his sudden departure.

Unreturned Reports and Missed Meetings at Woking

Brown stated that he asked Defoe and assistant Paul Bracewell for a brief report outlining the squad’s current depth, recruitment targets, and operational challenges so the administration could provide necessary support. According to the club, that report was requested more than once but was never received.

Neither Defoe nor his assistant attended that meeting or that day’s training session.

Reflecting on a Storied Playing Career and Management Realities

He transitioned into coaching roles, serving on an interim coaching staff at Rangers in 2021 and working in the Tottenham academy before leaving in 2024 to pursue a full-time managerial role.

Reflecting on his brief tenure at Woking, Defoe described the stint as an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career. Brown acknowledged taking personal responsibility for appointing the likeable former striker, noting he believed Defoe was the right person to lead an exciting new era for the club.

As we have seen many times before, success as a player does not always translate into management and leadership, Brown said. I sincerely hope to see him succeed in whichever direction he follows.
