Established in 1964, the station operates as part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, an elite triad composed of only three primary facilities worldwide, positioned in Spain, the United States, and Australia. These stations are separated by roughly 120 degrees of longitude, ensuring that as the Earth rotates, at least one antenna maintains uninterrupted contact with probes navigating deep space. The Madrid facility specifically manages communications for the European and African windows.

Six Massive Antennas Handling Interplanetary Missions

The facility relies on six massive radio antennas to send vital operational commands and capture faint signals traveling from millions of kilometers away. Among them is the legendary DSS-63 antenna, featuring a 70-meter diameter. Throughout its history, the complex has supported landmark space missions, ranging from early Apollo lunar landings to the veteran Voyager spacecraft, as well as ongoing projects like Martian rovers, the Juno mission at Jupiter, the Parker Solar Probe, and the James Webb Space Telescope.

The loss of Robledo de Chavela even temporarily creates dangerous blind spots. While the remaining two global stations can pick up some slack, network architecture dictates that certain missions lose direct coverage windows during critical interplanetary maneuvers where ground intervention is impossible.
