Stillwater residents awoke to a heavy security response on Monday morning after a piece of military ordnance was discovered on Ara Weiti Road. Police received a report of the hazard at 9am, prompting an immediate local response and the deployment of specialist personnel.

The New Zealand Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron quickly attended the scene. Authorities confirmed that the ordnance had been safely disposed of following the morning report.

Law enforcement officials maintained a secure perimeter around the hazardous device after it was discovered in the North Auckland community. The Defence Force’s specialized bomb disposal unit handled the operation directly on Ara Weiti Road.

Echoes of the Ōrewa Beach Discovery

This latest incident arrives exactly two weeks after a separate military explosive device was located on the Hibiscus Coast. In that prior instance, a 12-year-old girl named Sophia—visiting from Whangārei with her family during a beach holiday—spotted a suspicious metal object near stairs close to a playground on Ōrewa Beach.

The family captured a photograph of the rusted item, which featured red Spanish writing. After performing a reverse image search, they realized the object could be an expended flare, a marine location marker, or something potentially explosive.

That warning label prompted immediate concern from family members. Teresa’s sister, Dana Marcroft, noted that the translation was bit alarming, while young Sophia admitted she felt scared upon realizing the nature of the object.

During the Ōrewa Beach incident, authorities established a safety perimeter before the New Zealand Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team carried out a controlled detonation around 12pm the following day. Nearby residents along Marine Parade heard a loud bang as the device was neutralized.
