Russia launched a massive aerial offensive against Ukraine on July 27, 2026, firing over 400 drones and 40 missiles.
The scale of the overnight barrage marks one of the most intense periods of the three-year conflict. While the Russian Defence Ministry claims the strikes were a response to Kyiv’s Operation Spiderweb—which reportedly hit a third of Russia’s cruise missile carriers—the human cost on the ground remains the primary focus for Ukrainian officials.
Civilian Casualties in Chernihiv and Kyiv
In northern Chernihiv, a Russian drone struck a supermarket, killing two people. Among the dead was a nine-year-old girl. Another 25 people were wounded in the blast. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a deeply cynical drone strike on an ordinary supermarket and asserted there was absolutely no military justification
for the terror.
The violence extended to the capital, where Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire breaking out on the seventh and eighth floors of a multistorey apartment block following the missile attacks. Three people were wounded in Kyiv, and images from state emergency services showed vehicles engulfed in flames. In other regions, the toll rose as a glide bomb attack in Zaporizhzhia killed one person, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine stated that rescue and emergency operations continued all day across various regions and cities of the country, noting that the Russians launched over 400 drones and more than 40 missiles, which left 80 people injured and some potentially still under the debris.
The Economic Siege of Odesa’s Grain Corridor
Beyond the immediate casualties of the July 27 strikes, Russia has intensified a strategic campaign to choke Ukraine’s agricultural exports. The Black Sea shipping route, which handles 90% of these exports, is under extreme pressure. Between June 20 and July 20, Russia attacked 28 civilian vessels in the ports of Greater Odesa, resulting in 21 deaths and 34 injuries.
This maritime pressure is creating a financial crisis for farmers. Shipping costs have surged, with rates doubling over a single week. Specifically, the cost of shipping grain rose from about $24 per metric ton to about $47 per metric ton. This escalation follows a difficult start to the year where farmers already faced soaring fertilizer prices after Iran blocked ships through the Strait of Hormuz following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Tehran on Feb. 28.
Oleh Khomenko, CEO of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB), noted that many shipowners are no longer authorizing vessels to enter Ukrainian ports due to security risks. This has created a de facto slowdown of the corridor. The stakes are high; agricultural exports generated $22 billion last year, and the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council (VAR) warns that if terminals cannot recover quickly, storage facilities will overflow and global food security could be threatened.
Ukrainian Counterstrikes and Russian Casualties
Ukraine has not remained passive. This follows the aforementioned Operation Spiderweb, which targeted Russian strategic cruise missile carriers.
Russian-installed officials have reported their own civilian losses. In the occupied city of Horlivka, Mayor Ivan Prikhodko stated that a Ukrainian drone strike killed four civilians and injured three medics after hitting an emergency vehicle. Additionally, Russian authorities reported that at least 12 people, including two children, were injured in a drone attack on Belgorod.

Despite calls for a ceasefire and security guarantees, diplomacy remains stalled. President Zelensky has pointed out that Vladimir Putin is buying himself time to keep waging war by exploiting the lack of global condemnation for these attacks.
