As Marvel Studios returned to San Diego Comic-Con for its Hall H panel, studio head Kevin Feige faced direct questions about whether Victor von Doom has received enough narrative groundwork to anchor an Avengers crossover event. While fans have contrasted Doom’s single over-the-shoulder cameo in The Fantastic Four: First Steps with the multi-film teasers granted to Thanos during the Infinity Saga, Feige argued that public memory has exaggerated the scope of the Mad Titan’s early appearances.

Speaking with film personality Brandon Davis after the studio presentation, Feige pushed back against the narrative that Thanos enjoyed a far more substantial rollout. He pointed out that Thanos’s pre-Infinity War appearances consisted of brief post-credits stingers and short video transmissions.

“The Thanos buildup has built up in people’s heads over the years. He sat on a chair at the end. He put on a gauntlet and said, ‘I’ll do it myself.’ And he yelled at Ronin on a video screen briefly. I remember the memes making fun of Thanos. ‘He’s just sitting in a chair.’ There was a Twitter feed updating every day, ‘I’m still sitting in my chair.’ It was more clever than that, it was funny.”

That fan ridicule, according to Feige, proves that general audiences did not enter Avengers: Infinity War with an exhaustive understanding of Thanos either. Instead, that blockbuster acted as the character’s true introduction to mainstream viewers.

Paralleling the Thanos Rollout for Victor von Doom

Marvel is planning an identical strategy for Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Rather than requiring years of preceding cameos, the film is designed to unpack the villain’s motivations dynamically on screen.

Feige outlined that the upcoming multiversal clash serves as both an opening chapter and an ongoing exploration of the character.

“When we got to Infinity War we said, ‘This is really the introduction of Thanos the people.’ That’s how that movie was built. That’s what we’re doing with Doom. Doomsday is an introduction to the story of Doom. You peel the onion, you learn things about him as you go. It’s very much meant for audiences that know and love him from the comics and audiences who have no clue who he is.”

Victor von Doom will be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., marking his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe following an 11-year run playing Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. The character will receive further depth across subsequent releases, with Avengers: Secret Wars slated for December 17, 2027.

Addressing Production Realities and the December Release Date

Beyond creative strategy, recent behind-the-scenes schedule shifts have added pressure to the project. Speaking with Chinese media in Shanghai, Feige confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday moved from its original May slot to a hard December deadline because the production simply could not finish the film in time.

The scheduling adjustment carries tangible consequences for theatrical distribution. Opening on December 18, 2026, hands the entire IMAX footprint over to Dune: Part Three, forcing Marvel to utilize an alternative format known as Infinity Vision. Despite the logisitical hurdle, commercial demand remains high: presales reached $16.5 million in a single day, and the film’s trailer surpassed 500 million views within 24 hours.

Casting Updates and Character Expansion Across the Slate

The San Diego Comic-Con presentation also highlighted the broader cast and interconnected slate leading into the December crossover. Feige confirmed that Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will play a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday, bringing her “New Avengers” team over from the Thunderbolts movie. Fans can expect to see her even sooner, with Feige confirming an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead of the December 18 premiere.

Additional casting announcements included David Jonsson stepping in as the next Black Panther for IGN, and Ryan Gosling confirmed to star in a newly revealed Ghost Rider movie.
