Orbital Timeline and Perihelion Approach in August 2026
First discovered on July 4, 1873, Comet 10P/Tempel 2 has an estimated diameter of 6.6 miles, putting it on a scale comparable to Halley’s Comet. The periodic comet completes one orbit around the sun every 5.4 to 5.5 years, with its most recent previous sighting occurring in 2021.
Astronomers and observers tracking the current apparition note that the comet is reaching a critical phase of its orbit. It will reach perihelion on August 2, marking its closest approach to the sun, before making its closest physical pass to Earth on August 3.

In Bengaluru, astronomy enthusiast Deepak Choudhary successfully captured the image of the Comet 10P/Tempel 2 during the wee hours of July 26 using a Seestar S50 smart telescope. Experts emphasize that the best viewing conditions require escaping urban light pollution on a clear, moonless night.
“Comet 10P/Tempel 2 is a periodic comet. Although it returns every 5.5 years, it is not always easily visible from Earth. Its visibility depends on how close it comes to Earth during that return, and its position relative to the Sun in our sky. Depending on how bright it becomes during that apparition, some returns are excellent, while others are much less favourable.”

The Rare Ancient Dust Trail Captured by Astrophotographers
Beyond its standard coma and tail, this particular return has revealed an unusual structural feature that has drawn intense interest from the astrophotography community. According to Spaceweather.com, the comet is currently displaying a distinct, thin dust trail that gives it the visual appearance of Saturn viewed edge-on with its rings.

Unlike transient gas tails pushed outward by solar radiation, this ribbon consists of larger dust particles shed over centuries of prior orbits. The alignment is driven by celestial mechanics: Earth crossed the comet’s orbital plane between July 18 and July 22, placing the ancient debris stream temporarily edge-on from our perspective and magnifying its apparent brightness before it slowly widens again.
