The United Kingdom government has updated its financial requirements for Student and Child Student visa applicants, retaining strict evidence rules while naming only three African countries on its upfront financial proof exemption list, according to Legit. Published on Monday, July 27, the updated guidance lists Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia as the sole African nations whose nationals may skip submitting proof of funds upfront when applying, as reported by Punch Newspapers.
UK Student Visa Rules Name Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia for Exemption
Major African source countries for United Kingdom education—including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt—remain excluded from the exemption and must continue to submit full financial documents as part of their applications, according to Legit and Punch Newspapers. Alongside the three African nations, the exemption list includes Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, several European nations including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Financial Obligations and Document Requirements
Being placed on the exemption list does not remove the underlying financial obligation for applicants, according to official statements cited by Legit and Punch Newspapers. The UK guidance specifies that applicants must meet the financial requirements upon applying, noting that decision-makers may still request evidence during the application process.

Under the revised rules, Student visa applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees as stated on their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) alongside living expenses. According to Punch Newspapers, students studying outside London must show £1,171 for each month of their course for up to nine months, while those studying in London must show £1,529 per month for the same duration. Dependants add further to these totals: £680 per month outside London and £845 per month in London for up to nine months each, as reported by Legit and Punch Newspapers.
Accepted and Restricted Funding Sources
The updated framework defines clear parameters for acceptable and rejected financial sources. According to Legit and Punch Newspapers, accepted financial sources include:

- Government-backed student loans
- Official financial sponsorship
- Personal savings
- Funds provided by parents or eligible partners
The guidance explicitly prohibits relying on overdrafts, cryptocurrency holdings, stocks and shares, pensions, and money held in unregulated financial institutions. Furthermore, applicants depending on personal or family savings must prove that the required funds have stayed in their account for at least 28 consecutive days before application submission, with financial evidence dated no more than 31 days prior to application, as detailed by Punch Newspapers.
Additional Exemptions and System Oversight
According to Punch Newspapers, the United Kingdom also maintains financial evidence exemptions for specific applicant categories. These include individuals applying to extend their stay after spending at least 12 months in the country on a valid visa, Student Union Sabbatical Officers, doctors and dentists in training, and applicants whose nationality qualifies them for reduced documentary requirements.
This update arrives as the UK continues to tighten oversight of its international student visa system while preserving mandatory financial eligibility thresholds for prospective students.
