Apple Plans Thin MacBook Pro With OLED Screen and M6 Chips

Apple is preparing a significant overhaul of its Mac lineup, led by a radically thin MacBook Pro featuring an OLED display and unannounced M6 chips. Set for late 2026 or early 2027, the redesign wave aims to satisfy surging demand for AI-capable personal computers.

Driven by a consumer surge for artificial intelligence-capable machines, the technology giant is preparing new versions of nearly every Mac it sells according to people with knowledge of the matter. The upcoming rollout spans desktops and laptops, with the headline introduction centered on a luxury portable internally tracked as a higher-end counterpart to the standard MacBook Pro.

MacBook Pro Design Shifts and OLED Display Tech

The anticipated high-end model, frequently discussed under the moniker MacBook Pro, is poised to bring the most substantial external changes to Apple’s pro laptop family since 2021. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that the machine has a strong chance of representing a true overhaul, pairing an OLED screen with a significantly slimmer chassis. Every 14-inch and 16-inch portable released over the last five years has measured 0.61 inches thick, but the forthcoming hardware is expected to drop those dimensions noticeably. Replacing the traditional mini-LED backlight with a hybrid OLED panel removes a physical layer from the lid, concentrating the profile reduction in the upper half of the device.

The signature display notch that defined recent pro laptops is expected to vanish, replaced by a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout designed to house an interactive Dynamic Island. The modification aligns with upcoming interface patterns in macOS, where Spotlight’s search interface adopts a dark, pill-shaped aesthetic tailored to the cutout. Meanwhile, Omdia supply chain roadmaps indicate that Samsung Display will supply fractional screen size increases to 14.3 and 16.3 inches, which will allow for noticeably narrower bezels within a largely preserved overall footprint. To combat screen vibration when tapping the panel, Apple is engineering a reinforced hinge.

This leap in technology will not come cheap. Industry analysts project the Pro tier will carry a baseline premium of roughly 20% over current equivalents, pushing starting prices to approximately $2,499 for the 14-inch model and $2,999 for the 16-inch variant up from the $2,199 and $2,699 baselines of today’s M5 Pro models. Fully configured custom builds will climb even higher.

Staggered Launch Schedules Across the Mac Ecosystem

The broader Mac hardware refresh will arrive in staggered waves through the latter half of 2026 and into 2027. The introductory phase begins with a refreshed version of the conventional base MacBook Pro and updated iMac models arriving this fall equipped with the initial M6 chip, keeping their exterior designs unchanged in the short term. A low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro variant is scheduled to follow in 2027 to align with the new design language.

Simultaneously, desktop mainstays face shifting timelines due to external supply constraints. Apple is actively testing prototype iterations of the Mac mini with M5 Pro and M6 processors, while the heavier-duty Mac Studio is evaluating M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations Apple is now testing versions with upgrade processors. However, severe component scarcity driven by massive industrial demand for AI hardware has caused extensive delivery delays. Base model Mac studio shipments have stretched lead times to 10 to 12 weeks, with high-end configurations requiring up to 14 weeks from order to delivery.

Company leadership has acknowledged the unprecedented cost pressures. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook noted that component price volatility across memory and processing components has reached levels unseen in his four decades in the industry. While manufacturing adjustments and soaring component costs have forced adjustments upward across several product categories, Apple continues its development pipeline for the comprehensive hardware overhaul.
