Aiyuk’s path to Washington is legally and behaviorally obstructed. He is currently on the 49ers’ reserve/left-squad list and must apply for reinstatement from the NFL league office before he can be released and signed by another team. His relationship with the Commanders’ leadership is deep; Peters served as San Francisco’s vice president of player personnel from 2017 to 2020 and played a key role in drafting Aiyuk. Additionally, Aiyuk and quarterback Jayden Daniels were teammates at Arizona State.

Despite these ties, Aiyuk’s recent conduct has raised red flags. He posted cryptic videos and viral comments to Daniels, telling the quarterback, Stop running your mama and I might believe what you’re talking about. Former 49ers director of pro personnel Ran Carthon noted that this recent behavior is unfamiliar, though he acknowledged Aiyuk can be stubborn or may simply be trolling for a reaction.

The impact of this behavior is manifesting in the league’s executive circles. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, some executives are now uneasy about signing Aiyuk, even for a veteran-minimum deal. One top executive told La Canfora he couldn’t bring [Aiyuk] into my locker room with my quarterback.

Wide Receiver Depth and Roster Strategy

Washington is currently operating without a clear “No. 2” receiver opposite Terry McLaurin. While Peters claims to be really happy with who’s in that room, the team has continued to add talent, including third-round pick Antonio Williams and the return of Dyami Brown in free agency. The team also has the financial flexibility to pursue other veterans, such as DMV native Stefon Diggs, though he carries his own off-field baggage.
