Scientists have discovered the fossilized remains of a 210-million-year-old dinosaur in northern Zimbabwe. Named Musango matusadonaensis, the lightly built herbivore or omnivore provides fresh clues about how prehistoric animals diversified across distinct ecosystems in southern Africa during the Late Triassic.
A newly identified dinosaur species unearthed on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe is reshaping what researchers understand about the ancient geography of southern Africa. Excavated in 2018, the fossil represents the fifth dinosaur species identified from the country, adding crucial context to a pivotal era when dinosaurs were beginning to spread across the planet before claiming dominance over global land ecosystems.
Anatomy and Physical Profile of Musango Matusadonaensis
Unlike the colossal, long-necked sauropods that emerged millions of years later in the Cretaceous period, Musango matusadonaensis was a remarkably modest creature. The animal measured about 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length—roughly the size of a modern car—yet possessed a very light build, weighing just 222 kilograms (490 pounds), which is comparable to a fully grown domestic pig.
Detailed examination of the remains indicates that the specimen was roughly eight years old and nearly fully grown when it died. Although researchers recovered no skull, they determined that the animal likely functioned as a herbivore or an omnivore, sustaining itself on vegetation growing alongside rivers and streams. Preservation of the skeleton includes bones from the spine, ribs, arms, legs, and feet, making it among the most complete dinosaur skeletons of its age discovered in Zimbabwe. The fossilized bones also bear evidence that the animal had previously survived and recovered from a severe injury or infection.
Revisiting Ancient Gondwana and Southern African Ecosystems
The discovery challenges long-held paleontological assumptions about the distribution of prehistoric fauna across the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. Investigators from an international team spanning the UK, South Africa, and Zimbabwe note that previous models assumed animal populations throughout the region shared a uniform composition.
“Until recently, it was assumed that the dinosaurs living across southern Africa were largely the same, however, these discoveries are showing that this part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana was actually made of a series of smaller ecosystems – each with a different cast of characters.”

The findings indicate that the region featured a mosaic of smaller, isolated habitats, with each environment hosting distinct animal communities. Researchers point out that the newly named species lived alongside lungfish and crocodile-like phytosaurs, as well as contemporaneous dinosaurs such as Musankwa sanyatiensis, which the same team described in 2024 as the country’s fourth known dinosaur.
Fieldwork in Zimbabwe and the Path Forward for Paleontology
The genus name Musango is derived from the local ChiShona language, translating to living in the bush
in acknowledgment of the remote and rugged terrain of the Zambezi Valley where the fossils were secured. The species descriptor, matusadonaensis, references the nearby Matusadona National Park.
Researchers emphasize that continued exploration in understudied African sites continues to yield remarkable returns compared to more traditional excavation grounds in Europe and North America. Scientists have already identified an additional new species from the region awaiting formal description, alongside reports of other local fossil deposits.

We’ve already got one other new species that we’ve yet to describe, while our team has been told about other fossils from the region that we’ve yet to look at. I think it’s likely there are even more dinosaurs still to be found there.”

These discoveries build upon previous milestones in the region, including the 2022 excavation of Africa’s oldest known dinosaur, Mbiresaurus raathi, which roamed the same territory roughly 230 million years ago. As collaborative international fieldwork advances under the guidance of institutions like Johannesburg’s Evolutionary Studies Institute and the Natural History Museum, specialists anticipate uncovering further evidence regarding how early dinosaurs populated distinct habitats millions of years ago.
