Teen Lifeguard Ryder Williams Rescues Boy From Massive Santa Cruz Waves

A 16-year-old California state parks rookie lifeguard became the center of public attention after a dramatic video captured him fighting through massive waves to save a young boy from drowning in the Pacific Ocean. According to local authorities and media accounts, the incident occurred off Seabright beach in Santa Cruz on a Saturday afternoon when a 10-year-old boy lost his balance, got knocked down by a wave, and was swept approximately 15 yards offshore.

A High-Stakes Struggle in Santa Cruz Surf

The rescue unfolded under perilous conditions driven by distant tropical cyclones, which prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings regarding hazardous waves and rip currents along the coast. State officials reported that the episode was one of 34 rescues handled by Ryder Williams’s lifeguard district over the weekend.

Photographer Scott Vander Dussen captured the high-stakes moment on video and posted the footage to his Santa Cruz Now account on Instagram. The clip showed Ryder rushing into the enormous waves to reach the child and holding onto him despite being tossed around by the powerful surf. Several bystanders attempted to step in to help against standard public safety advice, but the heavy surf beat them back.

“He told me: ‘I just was not going to let that happen,’” Shane Williams said during a telephone interview. “I almost started crying because how determined he was to save that boy’s life makes me so proud.”

Lifelong Preparation and a Family Water Legacy

Ryder’s father, Shane Williams, a retired firefighter, said during a telephone interview that his son had spent his entire life preparing for such a moment. Shane recalled taking Ryder as a baby on a beach cruise alongside the Santa Cruz cliffs, followed soon after by swimming lessons and learning how to surf and boogie board. By age six, Ryder was swimming completely on his own. He later excelled at water polo, playing the hole set position, which requires constantly fighting off opposing players.

That aquatic comfort translated into junior lifeguard training and eventually the California state parks lifeguard academy. Shane noted that his son fought through four days of fever to complete the academy program and secure his rookie position. Ryder’s mother, Shannon Johnson, works as a marine science research technician.

Despite the viral attention generated by Vander Dussen’s video, Ryder remained largely unaware of the online reaction because he does not use social media. According to his father, the teen viewed the event simply as executing his duties.

A Second Rescue Off Duty and Continuing Challenges

The dramatic Seabright beach rescue marked the first official save of Ryder’s career, but it was not his last for the day. Shortly after shifting off duty, Ryder helped save two other people who got into distress in the water. Shane noted that his son considered the second incident to be more difficult than the one caught on the viral video, though no cameras were rolling to capture it.
