US Military Launches Retaliatory Strikes on IRGC Targets in Iran

The escalation follows a volatile week that saw the conflict expand into joint operations. On Tuesday, U.S. and Saudi Arabian forces conducted precision strikes against IRGC-directed groups in eastern Iraq, targeting weapons and logistics sites after more than 30 drone attacks hit U.S. forces over a 72-hour window. While President Donald Trump told Fox News these strikes were co-ordinated with the Iraqi government, the Iraqi presidency denounced the action as a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.

Targeting the IRGC: Command Centers and Civilian Casualties

The U.S. response began at 20:00 ET on Wednesday and lasted approximately one hour. According to Centcom, the strikes targeted military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities. The military maintained that all Iranian missiles fired during the preceding attacks were intercepted.

However, the strikes resulted in civilian deaths on Iranian soil. Iranian state media agency Irib reported hits on the islands of Abadan and Qeshm, both critical to the oil industry.

This event adds to a mounting death toll. Two U.S. service members were killed on a Friday in an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan, with a third missing and four others injured. Total American casualties in this war have risen to 16, with more than 400 troops wounded.

The Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman

The maritime theater has become a primary flashpoint. The IRGC claimed it struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz because they ignored warnings and used an unsafe and illegal route. In a separate but related escalation on June 13, 2019, the U.S. reported that the IRGC used limpet mines to damage the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous and the Front Altair in the Gulf of Oman.

During that June 13 event, Iran attempted to disrupt U.S. surveillance. Lt. Col. Earl Brown, a CENTCOM spokesperson, told ABC News that a modified Iranian SA-7 surface-to-air missile attempted to shoot down an MQ-9 Reaper drone, missing it by approximately one kilometer.

The aftermath of the tanker attacks saw Iranian small boats prevent salvage tugs from towing the Front Altair. While the 23 mariners on board were eventually rescued by the Hyundai Dubai, the ship’s master felt compelled to turn the crew over to Iranian custody. They were held for two days before being flown to Dubai.

Diplomatic Friction and the “Friendly Negotiations”

The current wave of strikes follows a brief period of relative calm. President Trump had suspended an intensive 13-night bombing campaign the previous Friday and described ongoing talks as very friendly negotiations. However, Tehran denied that any such discussions were taking place.

IRGC Claims Strikes on US Military Assets in Jordan and Kuwait

The fragility of these talks was highlighted by a meeting between Trump and Saudi defense minister Prince Khalid bin Salman. According to an unnamed U.S. official cited by Axios, the Prince conveyed that Saudi Arabia wants to de-escalate tensions. Despite this, Trump vowed a hard response after the Tuesday attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan.

President Donald Trump stated that they were going to hit them very hard because it was their turn to do so, noting that the opposition knew it was coming and had asked them not to proceed.

The Shadow War: Cyber Attacks and Proxies

Beyond the kinetic strikes, the conflict extends into cyberspace and proxy warfare. Reports from Fox News and Ynet indicate that Iran attempted a cyberattack on Israeli water and sewage facilities on April 24-25, using American servers to target chlorination systems. The Israeli Water Authority and National Cyber Directorate neutralized the breach without interruption to the water supply.

US Military Death Toll Hits 17 as Airstrikes Against Iran Continue

In Iraq, the human cost for Iranian-backed forces is rising. The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) reported that at least 20 of its members were killed in the recent joint U.S.-Saudi strikes. This follows a period of intense activity; CENTCOM reported that Iran-aligned groups in Iraq carried out more than 600 attempted attacks against U.S. citizens and facilities between February and April.

The conflict, which began with strikes in February, has now persisted for five months. While Trump initially suggested the war would last only a few weeks, the current trajectory suggests a prolonged struggle for regional dominance between the Sunni-led Saudi Arabia and the Shia-led Iran.

CENTCOM has issued a stark warning to the IRGC and its proxies: they must cease attacks against U.S. interests or face further military action.
