Reverend Canon Guy Hewitt read a personal message during the service sent by King Charles, noting that while sports history features many respected champions, very few invoke an immediate smile across the Commonwealth quite like Sir Garfield, who belongs very firmly in the latter category.

Born in colonial Bridgetown in 1936, Sir Garfield built an extraordinary career spanning from 1954 to 1974. Across 93 Test matches, he accumulated 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 while capturing 235 wickets with his versatile seam and spin bowling. His athletic resume featured landmark feats, including an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958—an achievement that stood as the world Test record for 36 years—and hitting six sixes in a single over during a county match for Nottinghamshire in 1968.

Prime Minister Mottley observed during the tributes that a man who if he had not achieved any of those great feats on the cricket field would have been immortalised by his community as a good man and a great man.

The West Indies Test squad returned directly from Trinidad to attend the funeral, having secured a 90-run victory over Pakistan inside four days. Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow noted that the team dedicated their performance to the late icon on what would have been his 90th birthday, reflecting the courage, resilience and skill that defined his remarkable career.

The state funeral followed a two-day lying-in-state period at the Barbados parliament and the Kensington Oval, allowing thousands of citizens and dignitaries to pay their respects. Following Wednesday’s service of thanksgiving, Sir Garfield will be laid to rest in the Icon Section of the Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens in the southern part of Barbados.
