While artificial intelligence handles conversational discovery, the core routing engine continues to manage complex itineraries across various forms of travel. Google Maps accommodates driving, public transport, walking, ride sharing, cycling, flights, and motorcycle transit by displaying the best recommended route in blue while keeping alternative paths shaded in grey. Some directions in Google Maps are in development and may have limited availability.

Customizing Multi-Stop Routes and Travel Modes

Planning a multi-destination trip involves specific constraints depending on how you choose to travel. Users on desktop computers can add up to nine total stops, which includes the final destination, for driving, walking, cycling, ride sharing, or motorcycling. However, public transport and flight directions do not support multi-stop additions within a single itinerary. Users can also search for places along their route and change the order of stops by finding the destination they want to move and dragging it.

To preview details before traveling, users can click Directions, enter a starting point and destination, and then click Details under the chosen route. Clicking Expand provides more detailed directions, and pointing to a step yields a preview photo if Street View is available. To get Street View for a specific step, users click the photo, and they can navigate through other steps using the Previous step or Next step buttons in the bottom-left box.

To refine a journey further, commuters can adjust travel preferences directly within the routing menu. Additionally, travellers can modify departure or arrival times after getting directions by clicking Leave now and selecting Depart at or Arrive by to find the best route based on estimated traffic and public transport schedules for single-destination trips. Users can also switch between miles and kilometres by clicking the Maps scale at the bottom right of the screen.

Ranking Factors and Third-Party Mobility Integration

When multiple transport options appear on screen, the platform organizes them based on a combination of objective factors designed to help find relevant and useful info. The ranking system considers trip duration, distance, price, mode preference, and query relevance, with the most important factors generally being mode preference, trip durations, and sometimes price. Where available, the service also surfaces other mobility services like scooter or bicycle rentals and vehicle ride services.

Google notes that these supplementary transport services are provided by third parties who have made their transport data publicly available or who have a partner agreement with the platform. Importantly, business relationships with transportation providers do not influence how different travel options are ranked in search results. Official guidance also reminds users to stay aware of their surroundings, stay safe, and follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path when relying on Google Maps directions.
