The sudden death of director Justin Hardy has brought an abrupt pause to a life and career defined by historical storytelling, television dramas, and a deeply personal cinematic reckoning. Hardy passed away at age 61 after suffering a heart attack on Friday night, according to statements released by his family to the Press Association.

He leaves behind his wife, Larissa, and children Sam, Ludo, Nico, and Summer. Throughout his career, Hardy balanced television work on mainstream UK series with meticulous historical documentaries for major networks, before dedicating his final years to a deeply personal film trilogy.

Television Directing Roots and Historical Documentaries

Before turning to feature filmmaking centered on his family’s artistic legacy, Hardy established himself across British television. After reading history at Oxford University, he studied film at Bournemouth and scriptwriting at the University of California, UCLA, before directing episodes of established series including The Bill and London’s Burning.

His television portfolio extended into ambitious historical reconstructions and documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, and CNN. His credits in that arena included Princes In The Tower, Trafalgar Battle Surgeon, The Relief Of Belsen, and Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen. His work earned him nominations for both an Emmy and a BAFTA, while in recent years he also shared his craft by teaching screenwriting at University College London.

Closing the Wicker Man Chapter With Brother Dominic

Hardy’s most profound creative chapter in recent years involved confronting the complicated shadow cast by his father, Robin Hardy, director of the 1973 folk horror landmark The Wicker Man. That original film, which starred Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, and Britt Ekland, followed a police officer investigating a missing girl on the fictional Scottish island of Summerisle. Despite initially bombing at the box office and costing Robin Hardy his family life, the film eventually attained enduring cult status.

Before Robin Hardy died at age 86 in 2016, he had expressed a public desire to complete a trilogy following his 2011 follow-up, The Wicker Tree. Following their father’s death, Justin and his brother Dominic were approached about finishing a third film. They viewed the opportunity as an impetus to close the chapter on the films.

That effort culminated in 2024 with the brothers releasing the documentary Children of the Wicker Man, which chronicled their family’s legacy and their father’s artistic sacrifices.

Wrath of the Gods and a Final Cinematic Vision

Building on concepts discovered in recently unearthed scripts and storyboards written by their late father, Justin Hardy directed the concluding installment of the trilogy, titled Wrath of the Gods. The film stars Francis Magee from Game of Thrones and Norwegian actress Christiane Schaldemose. It follows an isolated woman on an island caught between past ghosts and present gods as she confronts dark family secrets.

Dominic Hardy recalled viewing the completed project, telling his brother that he had made a film with a capital F—his own vision that successfully settled their father’s legacy by telling an important, humanist story. Justin Hardy had recently told his brother that he loved writing such projects and hoped to continue doing so for the rest of his career.
