Ukraine struck a major oil refinery and the Engels airfield deep inside Russia using long-range drones, as Moscow reported eight deaths from overnight attacks. The strikes targeted strategic aviation and fuel facilities in the Saratov region, roughly 600km from the Ukrainian border, according to regional and presidential statements.
Ukrainian forces launched intensive overnight drone operations targeting critical infrastructure deep within Russian territory, hitting facilities located hundreds of kilometers from the border. Additional strikes hit an oil depot in the Kaluga region and a drone launch site in Bryansk.
Russian authorities reported that eight people died across the various strikes, while air defense systems shot down or intercepted 635 drones. The expanding range of these unmanned aerial assaults highlights an intensifying campaign directed at logistics hubs and energy infrastructure as the frontline remains largely static.
Engels Airfield and Saratov Oil Refinery Damaged
President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the weekend operations on social media, categorizing the long-range strikes as part of our long-range sanctions
designed to target Russian facilities financing the ongoing war effort. Zelensky explicitly identified the Engels airfield and the Saratov oil refinery as strategic targets.
The Ukrainian military reported that the strike on the Engels airfield ignited a significant blaze. The installation serves as a primary base for Russian strategic aviation, housing Tu-95MC and Tu-160 bombers regularly deployed to launch missile strikes against Ukraine. Saratov regional Governor Roman Busargin acknowledged that drone impacts caused damage to civilian infrastructure across Saratov and Engels, later confirming that two people were killed in the region.
Logistics Hubs and Warehouses Under Fire
Beyond energy and military installations, retail logistics hubs have become central targets for both sides. Russia reported another strike on a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. In the Samara region, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev characterized the attack on the Wildberries warehouse—which triggered a fire—as yet another terrorist act
by Ukraine, though he reported no casualties.
Ukrainian forces maintain that Wildberries hubs function as legitimate military targets supplying Russian forces with navigation equipment, drone components, and other necessary gear. The retailer employs approximately 48,000 people, and recent Ukrainian strikes have heavily impacted small and mid-sized businesses relying on the platform’s logistics.
Simultaneously, Russian forces targeted postal and retail infrastructure within Ukraine. Ukrainian online retailer Rozetka announced that its largest warehouse was struck overnight by Russian drones, though no injuries were reported. This followed earlier Russian attacks focusing on warehouses operated by Ukraine’s Nova Poshta postal company.
Casualties and Regional Toll
The human cost of the renewed exchange of strikes continued to mount across multiple regions. In Russia’s Udmurtia region, a Ukrainian drone attack on a civilian vehicle resulted in three deaths, according to reports. Another three fatalities were recorded in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.
On the Ukrainian side, regional authorities reported civilian casualties resulting from Russian bombardments. Ukraine stated that one person was killed during a Russian strike targeting a postal terminal near the northeastern city of Kharkiv.
These converging attacks unfold against a backdrop of diplomatic stagnation. US-led mediation efforts aimed at ending the conflict initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 have yet to produce any breakthroughs, leaving both militaries locked in a war of attrition focused heavily on supply lines, energy grids, and major logistics centers.
