The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially withdrawn its backing for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s re-election bid, making it the first national football association to do so. According to msn.com, the decision follows a widespread backlash over Infantino’s controversial proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investment firms.
Wales Becomes First Nation to Drop Support for Infantino
Infantino is scheduled to stand for re-election in March next year for the 2027–2031 term. In an official statement, the FAW revoked its previous letter of endorsement, declaring that the recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football.
The association added: Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.
The Controversial World Cup Sell-Off Plan and Global Backlash
The crisis surrounding FIFA’s leadership erupted after Infantino attempted to advance a lucrative plan involving private investors, which critics labeled an attempted cash-grab. The proposal was quickly rejected by three confederations. The rebellion was spearheaded by UEFA, European football’s governing body, which announced that its 55 national members would boycott global tournaments—including the men’s senior World Cup in 2030—if the move proceeded.
An emergency meeting raised the prospect of a boycott, featuring intervention from Laura McAllister, the former Wales captain and vice-president of UEFA. According to AOL, UEFA criticized what it termed secret schemes on fast-track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game.
Telegraph Sport reported that UEFA also threatened FIFA with legal action over the sell-off plan and warned officials not to destroy related material. Faced with intense pressure and the threat of widespread boycotts, Infantino shelved the widely denounced plan.
Mounting Pressure and Calls for a Leadership Review
Despite the U-turn, Infantino’s decade-long reign at the head of world football remains under intense scrutiny. Political leaders and football associations have piled pressure on the FIFA president as opposition grows ahead of next summer’s vote. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that Infantino is the wrong man
to lead FIFA.
Meanwhile, the English FA joined Wales in opposing Infantino’s continued leadership, stating that it fully supports UEFA’s position of no confidence. The English FA called for a full and robust review of FIFA’s leadership and governance to ensure that the global game is run transparently, for the benefit of all 211 member nations and with the long-term stewardship of football at its heart.
Concacaf and the AFC also criticized the proposals. Candidates from UEFA and other confederations are reportedly preparing to challenge Infantino if he does not step down before the election, though he has signaled no intention to depart.
