Google Health App Adds Two-Way Syncing With Apple Health

Google has released the Trustedreviews 5.05 update for iOS, resolving a long-standing limitation by introducing two-way data synchronization with Apple Health. Previously, the application supported a one-way connection that allowed iPhone users to import data from Apple Health, HealthKit, and the Apple Watch into Google Health. However, users could not send information recorded by Fitbit devices back to Apple’s platform without relying on third-party apps or workarounds.

Google Health Version 5.05 Introduces Two-Way Apple Health Syncing

The restriction originated more than a decade ago. When Apple launched its HealthKit framework in 2014, Fitbit chose not to support the platform—a stance that persisted even after Google acquired the company. The Google Health app originally launched on iOS in May alongside the new line of affordable Google 9to5Mac health trackers. With the new version 5.05 release, supported Fitbit data such as workouts, exercise records, step counts, sleep tracking, vitals, and other health metrics can now be shared with Apple Health automatically.

How to Set Up and Customize Data Sharing

According to the app’s changelog and user instructions, users can establish the connection directly through the droid-life.com app or via Apple Health. Within the Google Health app, users navigate to the Partner apps section—accessed by tapping the profile icon—and select Apple Health, or use the prompt on the Today page to review Apple Health permissions. Alternatively, users can open the Apple Health app, tap the Sharing tab, select Apps, choose Google Health, and select the types of data to share.

During the setup process, users can decide exactly which categories and individual metrics to sync, as well as how much historical data to include, such as the past 30 days versus full history. Once permissions are granted, data begins flowing so that Fitbit-recorded details become available to other HealthKit-compatible apps. In addition to the syncing update, Google Health 5.05 addressed stability issues related to VO2Max calculations, exercise maps, and editing workouts after completion.

Current Limitations and Missing Metrics

Despite the addition of native two-way syncing, certain health metrics remain unsupported. User reports indicate that heart rate variability (HRV) data does not currently transfer between the two platforms. According to Androidheadlines, this incompatibility occurs because Google Health and Apple Health use different formulas and methods to calculate HRV.

Smart Health Links and Medical Record Sharing

Alongside fitness tracking integration, version 5.05 introduces Smart Health Links, though this feature is currently limited to the United States. Users in the US can share summaries of their medical records stored in Google Health with healthcare providers or family members using a secure URL or QR code. Healthcare providers may accept these links during check-in to supplement a patient’s health history. To utilize this feature, users navigate to the Health tab, select the Medical section, choose Shareable records, tap the plus button to select desired data, save the link, and access the URL or QR code via the three-dot menu.
