Forecasters anticipate intense thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail across western, southern, and eastern parts of the country, while temperatures remain high, reaching up to 35°C in some areas.
Regions Under Yellow Code Warning
The regions identified as potential sites for dangerous meteorological phenomena and intense rainfall include:
- Western and Central Bulgaria: Sofia-province, Montana, Vratsa, Lovech, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, and Smolyan.
- Northern and Eastern Bulgaria: Ruse, Razgrad, Shumen, Silistra, and Dobrich.
- Coastal Areas: Severe storm development is expected over the regions of Varna and Burgas, where strong afternoon storms are anticipated.
While these regions face the highest risk of convective storm activity, Northwestern Bulgaria is expected to remain the most stable area, with the probability of precipitation there considered significantly lower.
Temperature Forecasts and Atmospheric Instability
Despite the incoming instability, the country remains in a warm air mass. Maximum temperatures across the country are forecast to reach between 30°C and 35°C, with the capital, Sofia, expected to see highs around 30°C. The day is expected to start with sunny conditions in the morning, but as the day progresses, the atmosphere will become increasingly unstable, leading to the rapid development of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds.
In Sofia specifically, the day will begin with sunny weather and a rapid increase in temperatures. By the afternoon and evening, there is a probability of short-term rain and thunderstorms. Meteorologists note that locally more intense rainfall is not excluded, particularly in the southern and western neighborhoods of the capital and along the slopes of Vitosha Mountain. The day is expected to be warm and relatively stifling before the development of the storms.
This significant atmospheric instability creates conditions for sudden, heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, and hail, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. The wind is expected to gradually orient from the north-northwest and will be light to moderate.
Conditions at the Black Sea Coast
Coastal weather will see a distinct shift throughout the day. Over the northern coastline, cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds will develop as early as the morning, while this development will spread to most other coastal areas later in the day. Short-term rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in many places, with conditions suitable for hail. The extreme southern coastline is expected to remain almost free of precipitation.
The wind will be light, blowing from the southeast, but will orient from the north-northwest after noon. Maximum temperatures along the coast will reach between 26°C and 30°C. The sea water temperature is reported at 25°C, with temperatures north of Kaliakra at approximately 20°C. The sea state is expected to remain at about 2 degrees of turbulence.
Mountainous Terrain and Safety Risks
For those in higher elevations, the forecast is particularly volatile as conditions are most favorable for the development of powerful thunderstorm cells. Over the Rila-Rhodope region and the Western and Central Balkan Mountains, significant cumulus and cumulonimbus cloud cover will develop. Strong, short-term precipitation, thunderstorm activity, and conditions for hail are expected.

At an altitude of 1,200 meters, the maximum temperature will be around 25°C, while at 2,000 meters, it will be approximately 18°C. A moderate wind will blow, and at the highest peaks, it will be strong, originating from the west-northwest. The combination of significant vertical cloud development and winds at the peaks increases the volatility for outdoor activities.
The weather pattern for this Tuesday is characterized by a transition: the current high heat will be interrupted by convective activity before a more noticeable cooling phase begins. The wind will bring a gradual feeling of cooling during the coming days. Residents in the affected yellow-code zones are advised to monitor local updates as the afternoon progresses, as the intensity of hail and lightning can change rapidly based on local atmospheric conditions.
