Police and prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro launched Operation Quimera on Tuesday, August 4, targeting a sophisticated money-laundering scheme operated by the Comando Vermelho. Investigators state the faction moved over R$ 11 million through a North Zone club, extorted social venues, and managed a small coastal inn in Armação dos Búzios.
A sweeping joint enforcement effort across the state capital and the Lakes Region has exposed how organized crime infiltrates community spaces. Authorities from the Civil Police and the Public Ministry targeted assets linked to the Comando Vermelho in an early-morning sweep designated Operation Quimera. The crackdown focuses on how illicit capital from drug trafficking flows into recreational entities and hospitality businesses to obscure its origins.
Coerced Clubs and Extortion in the North Zone
The investigation began the previous year after leadership at the Social Clube Marabu, situated in Encantado, filed complaints stating that traffickers operating out of Morro do Dezoito subjected them to continuous threats. The local leadership demanded that administrators abandon the facility and surrender managerial control.

Beyond attempting to seize physical oversight of the social venue, the faction exacted a monthly payment of R$ 6 mil to permit the establishment to operate without facing violent reprisals. Investigators later uncovered a parallel scheme at the Várzea Country Clube in Água Santa, which served as the primary focus of Tuesday’s raids.
According to police statements detailed during the briefing, trusted associates of the drug network assumed informal control of the Várzea Country Clube. They directed internal decisions, managed party schedules, and oversaw financial flows without any legal or statutory bond to the organization.
Family Financial Networks and Million-Real Transfers
Financial intelligence analysis mapped a family network tasked with managing the underground accounts. Investigators discovered that transactions completely lacked proportion when measured against the declared earnings of the individuals involved.

Specific targets within the operation exhibited distinct financial roles designed to pulverize funds across multiple accounts. One suspect moved R$ 2.4 million across a six-month window despite maintaining no formal business activity. Another individual, registered officially as a receptionist with an approximate monthly income of R$ 3,2 mil, channeled roughly R$ 2.2 million over the same half-year period, which included receiving six separate transfers totaling R$ 253 mil from a primary target. A separate associate executed roughly 40 PIX transactions totaling R$ 240 mil while carrying about 20 prior police records tied largely to cargo theft.
The Coastal Inn and Asset Seizures in Armação dos Búzios
Beyond the capital, the criminal apparatus extended into the Lakes Region through the operation of a small lodging establishment in Armação dos Búzios.
Despite that modest capacity, financial reports show the business recorded R$ 3.44 million in transactions over slightly more than six months. The lodging also logged upward of 600 cash deposits totaling approximately R$ 955 mil.
The state judiciary acted on requests from prosecutors to freeze financial assets, impose restrictions on real estate and vehicles, block corporate shares, and lift banking and fiscal secrecy protections across the investigated parties. The Tuesday sweeps formed part of Operation Contenção, an overarching state government push designed to constrain the territorial expansion and financial reach of armed factions in Rio de Janeiro.
