The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is investigating the first documented case of locally acquired dengue virus in Virginia, confirmed on August 4, 2026. Diagnostic testing is split based on the phase of the illness. During the acute phase (0-7 days after symptoms start), the VDH recommends a combination of an IgM antibody test and a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), such as RT-PCR. Antigen testing for nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) can also be used. For those in the convalescent phase (more than 7 days post-onset), only IgM antibody testing is recommended.

The agency advises that any suspected case of dengue in a patient without travel history or other risk factors—such as organ transplants or blood transfusions—should be reported to the local health department immediately.

The primary defense against both dengue and endemic diseases like West Nile Virus is the reduction of mosquito breeding grounds. The VDH recommends a tip and toss approach, urging residents and business owners to eliminate any containers around their properties that hold standing water.
