Russian ballistic missiles and drones struck the Kyiv region on Wednesday, August 4, 2026, killing at least 14 people and injuring 27 others. The assault, which began after midnight, targeted residential buildings and warehouses, marking one of the deadliest strikes on the Ukrainian capital this year.
The barrage hit multiple locations across the city and its outskirts, leaving residents to scramble for cover. According to the Kyiv military administration, the enemy is once again massively attacking the Kyiv region
, with air raid alerts remaining active for over an hour. The human toll was concentrated in the Boryspil district, where nine people died, followed by four in Bucha and one in Fastiv.
Warehouse Destruction and Rescue Operations in Central Kyiv
The strikes caused significant structural damage to non-residential sites. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported via Telegram that a warehouse building near the city center was destroyed. While rescue teams managed to pull two people from the ruins, the Mayor warned that there may still be people under the rubble
as search and rescue operations continued.
Emergency crews also dealt with an ammonia leak triggered by the attack. In the wider region, fires broke out at logistics facilities and warehouses in Brovary, Velyka Dymerka, Kvitneve, and Peremoha. In the Bucha district, crews fought a warehouse fire in Chaiky after extinguishing another at a facility in Sofiivska Borshchahivka.
The Russian Defense Ministry’s Stated Targets
Moscow maintains that its strikes are precision-targeted at military infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the operation hit logistics hubs and supply centers used for the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the storage of weapons and military supplies.
Beyond the capital, Russia reported hitting three cargo vessels transporting military equipment near the port of Odesa. However, Ukrainian officials dispute this framing, stating that the enemy is once again deliberately striking civilians and civilian infrastructure

Patriot Interceptor Shortages and the Trump-Zelenskyy Talks
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has argued that a lack of ballistic missile interceptors only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives
. The U.S.-made Patriot system is currently the only asset in Ukraine’s arsenal capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, but stockpiles have been depleted, partly due to the Iran war.
Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Donald Trump last Tuesday to lobby for licenses that would allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles domestically. Domestic production, if approved, could take several months to materialize.
A New Phase of Indiscriminate Attrition
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to the president on defense technology, stated on Facebook that the war of attrition has entered a new phase where the enemy is attacking everything indiscriminately, including food storage, retail warehouses, and building materials depots.

This escalation is mirrored by Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure. On Tuesday morning, Ukrainian drones struck depots of the e-commerce giant Wildberries in the Moscow region, killing five people and wounding 10.
Civilian Casualties and International Alarm
United Nations human rights monitors have expressed concern that civilian casualties have reached their highest levels since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. One particularly harrowing incident in Kherson city involved a drone “hunting” a 52-year-old market seller. The volatility of the conflict also threatens to spill over borders. On July 30, 2026, a Russian missile entered Polish airspace and landed in a rural area. While no injuries were reported, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it a very serious incident
, and NATO scrambled warplanes in response.
