Gemini Version 1.36 Brings a New Look to Wear OS Smartwatches

Google is updating its AI assistant experience on smartwatches, introducing a redesigned interface that treats interactions as an extension of the watch face rather than a separate application launch. Distributed through Google Play with version 1.36 of the app, the update replaces the previous full-screen app view with a modern overlay, aiming to cut down transition times on wrist-worn devices.

The interface incorporates the Neural Expressive background style found across the broader Android ecosystem, accompanied by the standard Gemini symbol and a greeting message. Play Store preview imagery indicates that the updated display also surfaces question transcriptions and confirmation readouts for completed actions.

While version 1.36 is already rolling out widely via Google Play, the new overlay is tied to a remote server-side toggle controlled by Google. Because of this phased activation, two different watches running the exact same software version may temporarily display different interfaces until the rollout reaches all users.

When users opt in to the Gemini application, it replaces Google Assistant as the primary assistant on the watch. Google notes that while users can switch back to Google Assistant at any time through the device settings, certain voice features associated with the older assistant are not yet available within the Gemini environment.

The assistant relies on natural language processing to handle everyday requests directly from the wrist. Users can manage communication tasks, such as asking the system to send a message to a contact regarding a delay, or retrieve specific details like restaurant locations shared in prior emails. Additional capabilities include music playlist creation for running workouts and memory prompts, such as recording a parking space number.

Google specifies that the application requires a compatible Wear OS smartwatch connected to a supported companion device, with availability varying by region and language.

The visual overhaul follows a broader push by hardware partners to put AI interactions front and center on Wear OS. Samsung previously brought Gemini into the spotlight with the Galaxy Watch8 series, paving the way for deeper integration on subsequent generations that support multi-step commands and cross-application interactions.
