Navigating Rural Licensing Pressures and Architectural Expansion
The property’s clubhouse bar and restaurant operated for years as a popular social anchor run by Linda Morgan, while Dónal managed course maintenance. However, tightening rural drink-driving laws ultimately impacted the client base, prompting the closure of the course and bar during the 2000s. To adapt to changing circumstances, the owners pivoted by converting the former clubhouse into a substantial family home. Local designer Aidan Hurley—who’d been an occasional golfer here in the past, too—drafted the residential layout, securing Cork County Council approval to expand the footprint to 3,725 sq ft.

The expanded residence features four en-suite bedrooms, including a master suite positioned to one side of the main entrance complete with a Jacuzzi on a raised plinth. The interior also showcases a vast, high-volume living area reaching approximately 14ft, supported by glulam beams and feature stone. Outside, selling agent Colm Cleary of Schull-based James Lyons O’Keeffe auctioneers highlights the substantial 4.9 acres of retained grounds, which now feature mature gardens cultivated by Dónal Morgan. Plantings include palms, tree ferns, olive trees, hydrangeas, azaleas, camellias, cherries, gunnera, and monkey puzzle trees, many of which thrive due to the property’s proximity to the sea.

This sits alongside properties such as Schull Point on the Colla Rd, which was listed in June with a €1.85m AMV and is understood to have the wind under its ‘sale’, under good current offer. Now, with their children reared and Dónal in his early 70s, the couple is preparing to sell up and move to a smaller property they have nearby, leaving behind a sanctuary that once hosted the Calves Week yacht racing fleet views and countless coastal sunsets.
