Mark Zuckerberg’s $390 million superyacht, the Launchpad, did not intentionally ignore an assistance call from a stranded 21-foot skiff near Juneau, Alaska, last week, according to Brian Baker, a spokesperson for Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. The Launchpad was closer to the fuel-depleted boat than a responding cruise ship, garnering negative attention on social media platforms once details of the maritime encounter emerged publicly.
The Incident on the Water Between Juneau and Petersburg
Last Monday evening, a small skiff ran out of fuel in the waters between Juneau and Petersburg, prompting a call to the Coast Guard at approximately 9:30 p.m., according to an official statement provided to the Alaska Beacon. By 9:56 p.m., the Coast Guard determined the occupants were not in immediate peril and broadcast a marine assistance request on their behalf. UnCruise Adventures’ cruise ship, the Wilderness Legacy, answered the call and towed the disabled skiff back to safety in Farragut Bay.
However, maritime tracking revealed that Zuckerberg’s nearly 400-foot luxury yacht, the Launchpad, was actually positioned closer to the stranded vessel than the responding cruise ship. This proximity drew intense negative attention and online scrutiny across social media platforms once details of the maritime encounter emerged publicly.
Zuckerberg’s Representation Responds to Proximity Criticism
Addressing the controversy, Brian Baker explained that the crew aboard the superyacht simply missed the broadcast because they were tuned to a different radio channel at the time. Furthermore, Baker noted that the assist was already underway
by the time the crew reviewed the missed transmission.
Baker also confirmed that Zuckerberg, Chan, and their children were nowhere near Alaska during the incident, stating plainly that we’re grateful all parties are safe.
The Launchpad, delivered in 2024 by luxury shipbuilder Feadship as the largest yacht they have ever constructed, was operating without its high-profile owner onboard.
Passenger Reaction and Fleet Valuation Context
Michael Love, a software developer and passenger aboard the Wilderness Legacy, claimed the ship’s captain announced Zuckerberg’s yacht was closer to the stranded skiff. According to Love’s account shared in a Bluesky post cited by the Alaska Beacon, that announcement was met with near unanimous booing
from travelers on the cruise ship.
This maritime event unfolds against the backdrop of immense personal wealth. Zuckerberg commands an estimated net worth of $203.3 billion, positioning him as the sixth-wealthiest person globally as of Sunday. The bulk of this staggering fortune stems from his roughly 13% ownership stake in Meta, the parent company overseeing major social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
