The Sunday Morning Outage and User Lockouts

Early Sunday morning, members opening the Letterboxd mobile application found themselves unexpectedly logged out of their profiles. According to DownDetector, over 1,000 users reported issues starting around 6 a.m. PT. Attempts to sign back in resulted in the app briefly loading before returning users straight to the login screen. Meanwhile, visitors trying to access the desktop website were greeted with an error message reading, “An error occurred. Please try again later.”

One X user posted, “Letterboxd is down just when i was about to write my review,” while another worried, “rip to anyone who has been logged on letterboxd for years and doesn’t remember their username or password.”

Company Response and Communication Channels

Letterboxd first addressed the technical glitch via its X account, writing, Hang in there. Our team is aware of an outage affecting service and is working to restore access as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and support. Later in the morning, the platform posted on X, We’re still working to resolve the outage affecting our service. Thanks for bearing with us while we work to get things back up and running 🧡💚💙 The message, along with a photo of the 1980 movie Raging Bull, was also displayed on its website: “We’re taking a short break between rounds. Letterboxd is offline due to a server outage. We’ll be back soon!”

Acquisition Interest

A report from Puck in early July revealed that Letterboxd has been in early talks with several high-profile prospective buyers, including Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount Skydance, private equity firm TPG, and Alexis Ohanian. When that report broke, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony Pictures declined to comment, while representatives for TPG did not respond to requests for comment. A Letterboxd representative stated, As Letterboxd has grown, it’s natural there will be interest in what we do next. There’s nothing specific for us to share at this time. Any decision about Letterboxd’s future would involve the founders.
