Emory University Study Links Vitamin D to 13% Cognitive Boost in Early Dementia

More than 7 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s dementia, a figure projected to approach 13 million by 2050, according to Science Daily. In response to the rising rates of the neurological disorder, researchers at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, have published new findings in Sleep Medicine connecting daily vitamin D supplementation with enhanced cognitive test scores in adults facing early indicators of cognitive decline.

Emory University Study Links High Vitamin D Intake to Cognitive Boost in Adults at Risk of Dementia

The observational study examined 54 adults aged 50 or older who either had been diagnosed with or were suspected of having mild cognitive impairment (MCI) alongside sleep disturbances. Both MCI and sleep problems serve as key hallmarks of early dementia, with approximately 50 percent of individuals suffering from moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease reporting sleep disruptions.

Cognitive Test Results and Dosage Findings

Participants in the study completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)—a screening test used to evaluate thinking skills, memory, and dementia risk—alongside the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to measure sleep quality. When investigators compared reported daily supplement dosages against cognitive performance, participants taking at least 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily scored more than 13 percent higher on the MoCA than participants who took no vitamin D, even after adjusting for variables such as age, sex, body mass index, and education level.

In contrast to the higher intake cohort, lower daily doses of vitamin D showed no association with improved cognitive scores. Furthermore, the researchers observed no significant differences in cognitive performance between participants who consumed vitamin D2, typically derived from plants or fungi, and those who took vitamin D3, which is produced by the human body following sun exposure and sourced from animal-based foods.

A Critical Window for Brain Health Intervention

Study authors emphasized the timing of the intervention, noting that MCI represents an intermediate stage connecting normal cognitive aging to dementia. In older adults experiencing both sleep disturbance and mild cognitive impairment, this may represent a critical window for intervention, when cognitive changes are emerging, but opportunities to support brain health may remain, said senior author Victoria Pak, an associate professor at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, as reported by Science Daily.

Identifying accessible and modifiable factors, such as vitamin D supplement intake, during the earlier stages of cognitive decline may become increasingly important, particularly as rates of Alzheimer’s disease continue to rise, Pak added.

Study Limitations and Safety Considerations

Despite the encouraging association, scientists stressed that the project was a small observational study that does not definitively prove vitamin D enhances cognitive performance. Researchers also noted that a daily intake of 5,000 IU or more sits slightly above 4,000 IU, the maximum suggested daily intake generally considered a safe upper limit to prevent hypercalcemia. Consequently, the findings do not constitute an updated public health recommendation regarding specific vitamin D dosages.
