The Timeline for Cosmic Annihilation and the Big Crunch
The research team predicts that the Big Crunch will occur in approximately 33.3 billion years. This apocalyptic scenario builds on Stephen Hawking’s end-of-world prediction, which was backed by NASA.
The study models the universe behaving like a stretching rubber band. Under this framework, the universe will continue to expand until the elastic force becomes stronger than the expansion itself, causing everything to snap back inward. Dark energy, a mysterious force making up about 70 percent of the known universe, has long been regarded as the driving mechanism behind cosmic expansion. However, recent discoveries suggest this force may not be constant, indicating a hard limit to expansion before shrinkage begins.
Peak Expansion and the Fate of Earth
According to the new theory proposed by scientists, the universe will continue to expand at a progressively decreasing rate until it reaches a peak size roughly 69 percent bigger than it is today. Once that maximum expansion is reached, a gradual contraction will begin, serving as the inverse of the Big Bang—the widely accepted theory that the universe emerged from a singular point to create matter, space, and time.
Despite the immense 20-billion-year window before complete cosmic destruction, it is unlikely that Earth will still be around to witness the contraction. Separate predictions indicate that in 20 billion years’ time, our sun will have burned out and our galaxy will have collided with neighboring Andromeda.
