/ The governor of the Leningrad region confirmed early on Sunday that a fire had broken out at a station belonging to Novatek, Russia’s largest liquefied natural gas producer, on the Baltic Sea, amid reports of seeing drones in the region.

“There were no casualties as a result of the fire at the Novatek terminal in the port of Ust-Luga. The employees were evacuated,” Governor Alexander Drozdenko said on the Telegram app.

Drozdenko did not mention the cause of the fire at the Novatek station located in the port.

The Russian “Shot” news website reported on the Telegram application that residents in the area heard the sound of a drone, followed by several explosions.

The St. Petersburg-based Fontanka news agency said that at least two drones were spotted in the sky heading toward St. Petersburg before news of the fire at the station came.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports.

Russia and Ukraine have targeted facilities linked to each other’s energy infrastructure in strikes aimed at disrupting supply and logistics lines and demoralizing the other side in a war that has been going on for nearly two years and shows no sign of ending.

Drozdenko said a “high alert system” had been implemented in the area as officials gathered for an emergency meeting.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused the death and injury of tens of thousands and the displacement and displacement of millions inside and outside the country, while Russian forces control large parts of the Donbass region, which includes Donetsk and Lugansk, southeastern Ukraine, at a time when Kiev launches regular attacks on Russian sites and targets.
