President Edgars Rinkevics called for action against Russia’s use of Belarus to circumvent sanctions during a meeting with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on Thursday at Riga Castle.
Latvia’s Support for Belarus
Rinkevics expressed Latvia’s solidarity and support for political prisoners and their families in Belarus, according to Presidential Advisor Martins Dregeris.
Condemnation of Lukashenko Regime
The President condemned the repression of Belarusian civil society and the democratic opposition by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. He also condemned hybrid attacks against Latvia and other regional countries, including the creation of illegal migration pressure and the use of contraband weather balloons.
Rinkevics stressed the need for continued pressure on Belarus until the regime fundamentally changes its policies. He affirmed that Latvia’s position remains unchanged, advocating for continued sanctions against both Russia and Belarus.
The President welcomed efforts by the United States to secure the release of political prisoners.
Belarus held presidential elections on January 26, 2025, which were “won” by Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994.
