Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has disputed the assertion that most Australians are struggling and dissatisfied with his leadership. The comments came during a live podcast recording where he addressed a generalization about widespread discontent.
Albanese Responds to Criticism
Albanese responded to podcast host Karl Stefanovic, who suggested that many Australians “have the shits” and are unhappy with the prime minister’s performance. “I don’t think that’s right, Karl, for you to use such generalisations,” Albanese said.
He acknowledged that people hold different views and noted that both he and Stefanovic are doing well. Albanese also stated that while some people are facing hardship, portraying everyone as struggling is inaccurate. “People have different views. And you and I are both doing OK. So a lot of people out there, some people are doing it tough. There’s a lot of messaging out there that says everyone is doing it tough.”
The prime minister emphasized the importance of maintaining employment and highlighted his government’s efforts in that area. He acknowledged the challenges posed by global inflation but stressed the need for action rather than simply identifying problems. “What would make people do it harder is not maintaining employment, and we’ve made sure that that has occurred. And yeah, these are difficult times. There’s been global inflation, we get that. But you can either identify it and say, people are doing it tough and it’s all terrible, or you can say, yep, we accept that. We’re going to do something about it.”
