Casualties Among UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Corporal Rico Pramudia, 31, succumbed to wounds sustained on March 29 when a projectile hit his position amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed the Secretary-General’s deepest condolences to Pramudia’s family, colleagues, and the Government of Indonesia.
Another Indonesian peacekeeper, Fahrizal Rambe, was killed during the same weekend. Preliminary investigation findings indicate that a shell fired from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava tank struck a UNIFIL position, resulting in Rambe’s death.
To date, six peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL have been killed and several others have been seriously injured during the recent hostilities. Dujarric described these incidents as “unacceptable” and stated that they must stop.
Call for International Accountability
The Secretary-General has called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure the safety of UN personnel and the inviolability of UN property.
The UN has requested that the relevant parties ensure these cases are investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted by national authorities. Dujarric emphasized that attacks against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.
