Following a serious back injury in 2022 and subsequent overutilization during the India tour of Australia in 2024–25, where he bowled 151.2 overs, the seamer has experienced a series of enforced absences.

Uncapped Auqib Nabi Earns Historic Call-Up as Replacements Fill Sparsed Squad
To fill the vacancy left by Bumrah, the BCCI named uncapped fast bowler Auqib Nabi as his replacement. Nabi, a 29-year-old hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, became the first cricketer from the region to receive a call-up to the senior Test side.
Nabi’s selection follows a dominant domestic run where he claimed 60 wickets in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, steering his team to their first title. He also picked up six wickets across two first-class matches while touring Sri Lanka with India A in June-July.
India arrives in the island nation carrying multiple roster concerns. Captain Shubman Gill recently addressed the squad’s mounting physical issues following an ODI series against England where injuries left the team short-handed.

To remain in contention for a spot in the championship final, India needs to win seven of its remaining nine Tests in the current cycle.
Beyond Bumrah, the touring team is managing other fitness absences, including Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries respectively, while spinner Washington Sundar is set to miss the opening Test before returning for the second fixture. The team faces a three-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7, ahead of the first Test in Galle on August 15 and the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 23.
