Anya Taylor-Joy is officially set to enter Middle-earth, joining the cast of the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The Golden Globe-winning actress will portray Seren, a character described as a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm and a “trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil.”
The casting, revealed in June, places Taylor-Joy within a project that serves as a new addition to the established franchise. While her character, Seren, is an original creation not found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material, she joins a cast that blends returning franchise veterans with new talent.
Production and Creative Direction
The Hunt for Gollum is being directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his iconic role as the titular creature. Serkis, who previously portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and The Hobbit films, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting that he is honored to return to the world.
The film is produced by the team behind the original Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, including Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. The screenplay is penned by Walsh and Boyens, alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on December 17, 2027.

Plot and Franchise Context
The film explores a specific, previously untold narrative bridge between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. According to screenwriter Philippa Boyens, the story focuses on the period between Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday and the events at the Mines of Moria. During this timeframe, Gandalf grows concerned that Gollum might reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron, prompting him to send Aragorn on a mission to track the creature down. The production aims to expand the lore while maintaining a connection to the established films.
A Diverse Cast of New and Returning Stars
Taylor-Joy joins a significant roster of actors for the project:
| Actor | Role |
| :— | :— |
| Andy Serkis | Gollum |
| Anya Taylor-Joy | Seren |
| Jamie Dornan | Aragorn (Strider) |
| Ian McKellen | Gandalf |
| Elijah Wood | Frodo Baggins |
| Lee Pace | King Thranduil |
| Kate Winslet | Marigold |
| Leo Woodall | Halvard |
The inclusion of Jamie Dornan as Aragorn marks a transition for the role, which was famously portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy. Despite the recasting, Serkis noted that Mortensen is supportive of the film’s direction.

Taylor-Joy’s Preparation and Perspective
For Taylor-Joy, the role represents a personal milestone. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, she described the opportunity to play an elf as “very validating” and “a dream come true.” She expressed admiration for Andy Serkis as both a creator and an individual, noting that she has been a fan of the franchise.
Regarding her preparation for the role, Taylor-Joy shared that she is currently reading the books. She reflected on her evolution as a fan, noting that she previously held a “misguided idea” as a child that one could only be a fan of either Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings, but she has since embraced both. When asked about her character, Taylor-Joy jokingly remarked, “If my tombstone can say ‘Lethal Elf,’ I feel like I did a good job on this planet.”
