Assam: Congress slams BJP’s ‘point-blank shot’ video for targeting minorities

The Congress party on Sunday criticized the BJP after a video posted on the X handle of the BJP’s Assam unit sparked outrage, alleging it depicted the “targeted, point-blank murder of minorities.” The video has since been deleted.

Controversial Video

The now-deleted video reportedly showed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aiming and firing a rifle at two individuals – one wearing a skull cap and the other with a beard – accompanied by the caption “point-blank shot.”

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal condemned the BJP, stating the video was a “call to genocide” and a manifestation of a “fascist regime’s” long-held desires. He asserted the video was not simply “troll content” but “poison spread from the very top” demanding consequences.

Venugopal called for judicial intervention, stating, “There is no hope that Narendra Modi will condemn or act against this, but the judiciary must act, and there shouldn’t be any leniency shown in this case.”

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said deleting the video was insufficient, labeling the BJP as “mass murderers” and questioning the inaction of the courts and other institutions.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammed criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Sarma’s video, posted from the official BJP Assam handle, was an attack on the Indian Constitution. She expressed shock at the Supreme Court’s perceived inaction, questioning its role as a “mute spectator.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also criticized the BJP, noting the video was posted by the BJP Assam Pradesh X handle and deleted after public outcry. She expressed concern that the Election Commission would ignore the “vilest form of hate and political targeting,” calling it “toothless and useless.”
