A Bangkok curry restaurant exposed a foreign customer for cheating in an eating challenge in an attempt to claim a 20,000-baht cash prize.
Gold Curry Restaurant Details the Scheme
Gold Curry, a popular restaurant known for its Japanese-style rice curry and eating challenges, discovered the deception after reviewing CCTV footage. The restaurant offers various challenges with rewards ranging from free meals to 40,000 baht in cash for finishing large portions of curry within specific time limits.
The challenges include:
- Free meal challenge: Finish a two-kilogramme rice curry within 15 minutes
- Voucher challenge: Finish a four-kilogramme rice curry within 30 minutes to receive a voucher for 30 curry dishes
- 10,000-baht challenge: Finish a six-kilogramme rice curry within 30 minutes
- 20,000-baht challenge: Finish an eight-kilogramme rice curry within 45 minutes
- 40,000-baht challenge: Finish a 10-kilogramme rice curry within one hour
Initially, on December 12, Gold Curry congratulated the man on its Facebook page for completing the eight-kilogramme challenge in 40 minutes and awarded him the 20,000-baht prize.
CCTV Footage Reveals Cheating
However, on December 18, the restaurant announced it had identified fraudulent behavior. CCTV footage showed the customer repeatedly eating curry with his hands and concealing portions of rice in his trouser pockets.

The restaurant shared clips of the footage on its Facebook page as evidence. The man reportedly repeated this act multiple times, allowing him to finish the challenge with five minutes to spare.

Gold Curry has warned other restaurants hosting eating challenges to be wary of the individual. The restaurant has not yet announced whether it will pursue legal action or seek the return of the prize money.
