Bangladesh Elections 2024: After Uprising & Protests

Bangladesh will hold its next national elections on Feb. 12, eighteen months after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted following mass protests and violence that resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries.

Bangladesh Election Date Announced

The date was confirmed by Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin in a televised address to the nation on Thursday.

The country’s last elections were held in January 2024, resulting in a fourth consecutive term for Hasina. Those elections were met with controversy and a boycott from major rivals who alleged vote rigging.

Hasina fled to India on Aug. 5 amid widespread protests and has remained in exile since.

Since Aug. 8, 2024, an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been in power. The Yunus administration has banned all activities of Hasina’s Awami League party, preventing the former ruling party from participating in the upcoming election.

These elections will be the 13th since Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 following a bloody war.
