Boxing Champion Sharif Ahmadzai Arrested for Murder of Scottish Tourist

The gruesome discovery unfolded in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens when a homeless person stumbled upon a suitcase containing the remains of Elisabeth Jane Ross. The 38-year-old visitor from Edinburgh had arrived in Greece on June 26, staying initially with friends in Keratsini before moving into an apartment in Kypseli on July 10.

That apartment, as investigators later uncovered, was tied directly to Love Every Nation Athens, a refugee organization founded by Sharif Ahmadzai and his wife, Alaina Hall. Ahmadzai, an Afghan refugee who claimed the Greek super lightweight boxing title in March 2023, held the keys to the property.

The Investigation and the Wife's Crucial Testimony

Police credit a breakthrough in the case to the suspect’s own home. Alaina Hall grew suspicious late on the night of July 15 when she woke up to find her husband gone, prompting her to track his live phone location directly to the apartment where Ross was staying.

Suspicion intensified when Ahmadzai handed his wife €2,550 (£2,200) in cash alongside a brand-new iPhone 17 Pro, items investigators believe were funded by draining the victim’s bank accounts. Security camera footage subsequently captured Ahmadzai wheeling a suitcase away from the apartment complex toward the derelict building where the body was found.

A Greek police source stated via The Times that the testimony of the wife had been crucial and it would appear that she did not want to be part of the crime committed by her husband, adding that without her and CCTV evidence, they would not have been able to find this man.

Confession of Moving the Body Amid Denials of Murder

Following three days of interrogation, Ahmadzai admitted to investigators that he transported the victim’s body in a suitcase and dumped it in the abandoned building during the night of July 16. Police also noted he acknowledged withdrawing thousands of Euros using Ross’s credit cards at various ATMs.

Police sources suggest the altercation may have erupted when Ross caught Ahmadzai rifling through her belongings to steal her financial cards, or alternatively, that it stemmed from a sexual assault or rejected romantic advances.

Adding to the complexity of the timeline, the victim’s mobile phone remained active for up to a fortnight after her death. Text messages sent to her family in Edinburgh—including her father, a local lawyer—falsely claimed she wanted to be alone, a maneuver investigators describe as a deliberate attempt to delay missing-person reports.

As legal proceedings advance, family members and diplomatic missions have responded to the tragedy. Anne Bangham remembered her niece as a beautiful, loving and kind young lady dedicated to humanitarian volunteer work.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office stated that their thoughts were with Elisabeth’s family during that difficult time, adding that they were providing consular support and were in contact with the local authorities.

Meanwhile, Police Scotland confirmed that local officers are liaising with Greek investigators to support the grieving family in Scotland. Ahmadzai now faces charges of murder, robbery and illegal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in an Athens court this week.
