Charli XCX Releases Guitar-Driven Album Music, Fashion, Film

Charli XCX released her seventh studio album, Music, Fashion, Film, on July 24, 2026. The 11-song project, which clocks in at 30 minutes and 5 seconds, pivots away from the dance-heavy sound of 2024’s Brat, featuring a collaboration with film director David Cronenberg.

The transition was not a slow burn. Following a grueling year of touring for Brat, Charli XCX found herself back in the studio after inspiration struck out of the blue, according to the BBC. In a matter of weeks, she produced a collection of short, guitar-based tracks designed to process the whirlwind of the preceding two years.

This isn’t a sequel. Charli XCX told Marieclaire that she knew while making the record that she was never going to make that record again, arguing that repeating the same sound is not creatively rewarding.

The “Rock Music” Genre Debate

The album’s lead single and opening track, Rock Music, sparked an immediate identity crisis among critics and fans. The song contains the lyric: I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we’re making rock music. Madonna responded via a photo caption, suggesting that if a dance floor feels dead, the artist might be playing the wrong music, while Courtney Love accused the singer of being a troll, as reported by the BBC.

Charli XCX has pushed back against the “rock” label. She clarified on Instagram that she never said she was making a rock album, explaining that the song is actually about her relationship with Brat. In a conversation with rollingstone.com, the artist dismissed the idea of binary genres as very old-school, noting the record is simply the result of her working with Finn Keane and A. G. Cook.

Visual Identity and the John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorsese Cover

The album’s aesthetics are as curated as the audio. Rather than featuring the artist, the cover is a black-and-white photograph taken in New York in April by filmmaker Aidan Zamiri. The image features three icons: musician John Cale, designer Marc Jacobs, and director Martin Scorsese. The trio epitomise excellence in their respective fields – reflecting the album’s overarching theme of art, excellence and immortality.

The thematic obsession with excellence and immortality extends to the promotion. On June 26, during a visit to BBC Radio 1 studios, Charli XCX wore a Gucci Crêpe Jersey Dress retailing for $850, paired with pink crocodile pumps from Stuart Weitzman, as detailed by Marieclaire.

Track List and the David Cronenberg Collaboration

The album consists of 11 tracks, with the title derived from lyrics in the song SS26. The most notable entry is the final track, No One Lasts Forever, which features film director David Cronenberg. At nearly six minutes, it is the longest song on the record.

Physical Toll and Global Listening Sessions

On the track Rock Music, Charli XCX admits that the physicality of the Brat tour caused nerve damage in her neck. She told the Pop Pod that the pain has worsened over the last couple of years and has impacted her sleep, leading her to consider a different approach for touring this new record, as reported by the BBC.

Despite these health concerns, the rollout is expansive. From July 9-11, 2026, a series of listening sessions are taking place across 25 cities, including New York, London, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo. These sessions are held in independent theaters.

Looking ahead, a 12-date North American arena tour begins September 11 in Philadelphia. The tour includes two nights at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and two nights at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, with the electronic artist Underscores serving as the opening act.
